The rice field at Ujung Hyang is full of birds traditionally known as kokokan. So far population of hundreds of the bird lives peacefully. The traditional village leader Gusti Bagus Suteja said that the bird population in the area has never been harmed. This natural attraction is expected to become additional attraction to Taman Soekasada Oejoeng, popular as Taman Ujung, a historical sites located in the area which so far does not get much visitors.
Residents of the traditional if Ujung Hyang hold moral responsibility in preservation of the sites as by history, they inherit an order pronounced by the ancient king of Karangasem to their predecessors to take a good care of Taman Ujung. After renovation taking more than 12 billions Rupiah completed, most of staffs and security guards employed in the site are residents of the surrounding village.
Suteja who officially serves as the Head of Nature Conservation of Karangasem told that at night hundred of kokokan birds stay and sleep on trees in the area. Whilst there hunting prohibition has never been explicitly stated in traditional regulation of the village, no one has ever found hunting them. However to ensure their protection inclusion in the such regulation is suggested.
Suteja expressed his appreciation to traditional fishermen at Ujung village for their awareness and participation in protecting rare fauna especially sea turtle. In many occasion large sea turtles trapped in their net, but instead of consuming or selling them, the fishermen has always to chose to report it to his office and release the turtles back to the open sea.
“Fishermen community at Ujung village is an ideal example to be followed by others for their self-responsibility in conservation of protected rare fauna, and expected to contribute an additional value to the image of Taman Ujung”, Suteja continued.
