Increasing vehicle ownership especially motorbike affected in significant increase of traffic density in Denpasar, which in combination with narrow width of existing roads results in traffic congestions. The city traffic is worsened by by-passing traffic which currently hast to get through the city. Intensity of by-passing traffic from the inter-province hub on the north of Denpasar flowing down to the south where the main tourist centers like Kuta and Nusadua are located is quite high.

Ideal solution is implementation the long planed west ring road (WRR) to accommodate by-passing traffic, separating it from the city traffic. Those coming from inter-province hub in the north to southern area of Kuta and surrounding will not have to get through the city any longer. The city legislator Ir. I.B. Gede Udiyana thinks that WRR is actually a sensible solution to traffic problems in Denpasar. So far dense traffic from Tabanan and West Denpasar down to Badung southern areas like Kuta, Jimbaran, and Nusadua is accommodated only by narrow and packed Jalan Imam Bonjol, plus a little help of Jlan Mahendradatta.

Implementation of WRR will split traffic density on Jalan Imam Bonjol and Jalan Mahendradatta as those going down to Seminyak-Legian-Kuta area will certainly take WRR. “It is definitely a reliable solution to solve traffic problem in Denpasar”, he said.

Among the problem in proceeding with implementation of WRR is the fact that it will span across two different government cluster: the city of Denpasar and the regency of Badung. Therefore prior to implementation, coordination between the two governments is required. “Involvement of provincial government of Bali is required to bring governments of both the city of Denpasar and the regency of Badung
into a constructive mutual agreement”, he continued.

Statistical figures issued by The Directorate General of Transportation show that vehicle ownership – especially motorbike – is significantly increasing. Motorbike ownership constantly increases at 20% per year.
