Sand exploitation on the beach will certainly result in severe abrasion which affect local residents of the area. The history shown an example of sand exploitation on Padanggalak beach back in 2004 which resulted in abrasion affecting a long span of coastline, from Padanggalak to Klungkung.

Member of Badung regency house of representatives, Nyoman Gelebet expressed his worries on ongoing sand exploitation on Geger beach, South Kuta. He explained that massive exploitation of sand on the beach will weaken coral reef and create the way for tidal wave to destroy the coastline. Furthermore, affected coral reef will no longer able to supply sufficient nutrition for seaweed cultivated by traditional farmers, and no longer able provide food and shelter for fish.

Led by cultural leader of Banjar Sawangan Pemige Nyoman Reta, seaweed farmers, fishermen, and other residents of coastline villages as the parties which suffer for the impact of exploitation, have refused sand exploitation hidden behind beach revitalization program.

The issue brought up by the Vice Chairman of Badung house of representatives will be discussed in a joint meeting involving local residents and related government institution. Head of office for public facilities admitted the exploitation of sand on Geger beach which was then used for reclamation of Kuta beach, Sanur Beach, and Tanjung Benoa, but refused opinion that the exploitation will result in negative impact. “It has gone through sufficient research”, he explained.
