Tourism in Bali has to be aware on bedbugs, which so far has been identified in two large hotels. Expert from Udayana Unoversity, Prof. Dr. Wayan Suparta, M.S. revealed the situation in Renon yesterday (December 22nd). “This is quite a serious threat as our neighboring country, Australia, has been affected,” Suparta warned.
Bedbug has forced Australian government to spend 703 billion dollar in elimination force. A number of other countries including those in Europe including UK, America, Asia including Hong Kong has been affected. In the US, fight against bedbug was organized by the Secretary of Defense.
In the past, at around 1960s bedbugs could easily be found in houses located within dirty and poor neighborhood. This time the strengthening offenses threat large hotels in Australia, and worries arise that the same situation will arise in large hotels in Bali as well. So far Bali remains the main holiday destination to Australians. “We are informed that there have been complains reported by tourist staying in a large hotel in Bali,” he explained.
Potential infiltration of bedbugs to Bali is quite high with increasing traffic of holiday makers from the country. It is possible that bedbugs carried over in their luggage. Prof. Suparta admitted that he has not identified the exact species of bedbugs found in two large hotels in Bali. However scientific record he has shown that there are two different species of bedbugs, Cimex Lectolarius lives in sub-tropic area and Cimex Hemipterius living in tropical area.
Elimination can be conducted by either chemical or heat through steaming.
