20 puppies trafficked into Bali demolished by Gilimanuk Quarantine on Tuesday (january 27th). The puppies were trafficked into Bali on a passenger coach originating from Probolinggo, a small town in East Java. The puppies packaged in boxes was demolished by poisonous injection and then buried 1.5 meters deep. Their blood sample was taken for laboratory analysis to indentify potential rabies virus infection.
Head of enforcement department of integrated quarantine office of Denpasar, R. Heru Subandrio said that demolition was a must as Bali at the moment is in rabies endemic condition, and therefore any rabies-carrier animals entering or leaving Bali have to be demolished immediately. The procedure was regulated in decree of quarantine office, decree of the Ministry of Agriculture, and instruction of Bali Governor.
Seizure and demolition were also intended as a shock therapy for traffickers. The incident was the first time in Gilimanuk in 2009. Lately traffickers choose to use courier transport and inter-provice coaches to transport their goods.
On the other hand, quarantine office also expect pet lovers to participate in rabies endemic elimination by not transporting rabies-carrier animals. He further told that Bali has a unique breed of dog, Kintamani, and suggested pet lovers to promote it instead. “Bali has Kitamani breed, why dont we just promote this one instead?” he insisted.
A joint force at the 2nd security post of Gilimanuk ferry port seized a number of boxes containing puppies stored in luggage compartment of inter-province coach Wisata Komodo DK 7261 VA. The pupies was intended to be transported to Denpasar.
