Street sellers has been one of the major elements getting serious attention in rearrangement of two ferry ports connecting Bali and the larger neighboring island of Java, Ketapang port and Gilimanuk port. Street sellers make a color to every harbors, and having tmem properly managed will make better security and comfort. Bambang Soerjanto, the President Director of port operating company, PT Indonesia Ferry, told the press.

Similar arrangement has been successfully implemented at the Merak and Bakauheni, the ferry ports connecting Java and Sumatra, back in May 2008. The crowded ports are by far better now. Among the efforts are providing uniform to registered street sellers. In addition to looking better, the uniform helps security officers to control them.

Harbors and ports are vital objects of the country where security is essential. Registration of those making their economic activities in the ports is important. In achieving modern and reliable ferry industry, Indonesia Ferry puts attention to three main components. The first two are security and comfort to grow trust from end users. The last component, economy, will naturally follow.

Implementation of electronic ticketing system is among efforts to improve trust and comfort. There will be no more ferries traveling with exceeding passengers, reusing tickets, fake pricing, and giving equal opportunity to all passengers.

At the end of the day, Bambang said that the current image of dirty and dangerious will be replaced by safe, comfortable, and modern. One way to achieve it is by registration and better management of economic activity. Having them properly registered will help in ensuring security. They will all wear uniformed vest and hold ID card.

Ecosystem analogy model will be used. In rearrangement the port, Indonesia Ferry also keen to help the business continuity of street sellers making their life at the ports. The company will offer business assistance in various forms such as capital financing, attributes and equipments, uniforms, and mobile shops. Other things to come include religious facilities, integrated security system, smart mobile, hand sellers attribute, rearrangement of stalls, rubbish cars, and terminal for motorbike taxis.

“All economic activities within the port area will continue. We will just rearrange it to improve security and comfort. Street sellers are integral part of a port, people needs them”, he said. Uniforms will be distributed next week after Indonesia Ferry collected accurate data about the street sellers in both Ketapang and Gilipanuk ports.
