Bali provincial government officials with several public elements conducting cleaning action at Tukad Mati – Mati River – Denpasar on Friday yesterday to welcome United Nation Environment Program conference or UNEP.

Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika led that cleaning action along 12 km and involved around 1.000 people in it.

In that occasion which was followed by Government officers of Bali province as well as capitol city officers, Social Institution activists, entrepreneurs and the local people, even the governor went down to the muddy river demarcation and take the waste especially the plastic.

Head of Bali Environmental Agency, AA Gede Alit Sastrawan said that this movement conducted in order to commemorate UNEP conference in Nusa Dua on February 21-26 as well as Plastic Waste Day Care on February 21.

The governor still valued cleaning plastic waste action as a good thing to do considering the existence of rivers in Bali that is in a critical state in term of quality and quantity. This movement will becomes starting point in reducing plastic waste.

The governor wished for this movement can be conducted continuously and give impact to the entrepreneurs (private enterprise, industry, tourism, etc.) so “Green Bali” program could be realize immediately.

He invites people in Bali to reduce plastic utilization. It is due to its environment impact which is unfriendly at all. Besides its hard for this kind of waste decomposed in soil, plastic also pollutes the environment and damages soil structure.

“Everyday Bali produces 4.695 m3 wastes in which 70 percent of them is organic waste whilst the remaining 30 percent is inorganic waste,” he said.

According to him, plastic problem cannot be separated from people’s behavior who in their daily life still utilizing plastic bag. Without any support from the society and business world then the government effort in manage this plastic problem will fruitless.

In order to manage this plastic problem, starting from 2001 Bali provincial government has developed Greener Village in each regency/capitol city. Until today, there are 81 of them.

“The purpose of this program is to invite people conducting clean life pattern through minimizing the utilization of plastic waste as well as differentiate organic and inorganic waste,” he said.
