Tabanan Government in Bali suggested for their fishermen to use bubu – plated rattan fish trap – when catching coral shrimp or lobster that is quite potential in their territorial water.

“We wish for the fishermen to use bubu in order to prevent coral reef damage,” said head of Tabanan Fishery and Marine Agency, Nyoman Wirna Ariwangsa in Tabanan on Monday.

He confessed that shrimp fishing effort using the net is well known could damage coral reef existence, as it is the habitat for varied of fish in the sea.

“It is due to the net eye which is always stuck at the twigs or branches of that sea flora. If it stuck already then when the fishermen pulled it some part of the coral reef would be broken,” he said.

Thus, make he and his party suggested to those fishermen to use bubu in catching the lobster. Bubu here is a pated rattan fish trap in oval.

“Bubu socialization need to be supported and distributed since it has proved to be more environmentally friendly,” said Ariwangsa.

Meanwhile, the fishermen responded positively toward that government suggestion as far as they had used bubu already when catching the lobster in their territory.

“We had used bubu since months ago and this tool is precisely more effective than using net,” said Dewa Made Bakuh, member of Koperasi Nelayan Dharma Murti (KNDM) Sudimara Village Tabanan.

According to him, before there was government suggestion, most of koperasi members in his area had already used bubu as lobster catching tool.

“Besides bring no damage, by using bubu also we could catch more of them,” he said.

Bakuh mentioned that every bubu settled under the sea resulted in averagely one to two kilogram shrimp once it pulled.

“Moreover, when there is lobster season, we could have 16 kilogram per day or once it pulled onto the surface,” he said.

Bakuh said that lobster price nowadays is around Rp 180 thousands up to Rp 200 thousands per kilogram depend on the type and size.

Compared when using the net, he viewed that it is more profitable to use bubu. Using net make everything uncertain, the net also easily get damage or torn apart when it stuck at the coral.
