Ngerebong: Unique Tradition at Petilan Kesiman Temple

A unique religious ritual aged hundred of years held in Kesiman Village, Denpasar Bali. in that ceremony there is a ritual called ‘Ngerebong’ tens of people went tranced or mass trance.
This Pengerebongan or Ngerebong tradition held on yesterday Sunday (May 30) at Agung Petilan Temple in Kesiman Village Denpasar Bali, those who come to this temple not only Kesiman people but also those from another areas in Bali such as from Badung and more.
The ceremony that initially held quiet and solemn suddenly becomes hectic and tense. Tens of people, either men or women, who initially comes to the temple to pray unexpectedly get trance.
Those trance people then hold by their family or friends. Together with other thousands people at that temple, they walked around Wantilan Pura three times.
Not only get trance whilst screaming, laughing or crying, those possessed with holy spirit also conducted ‘ngurek’ or stab a Balinese sword known as keris to their chest, neck up to their head. Although all of those keris were sharp but there is no blood spilled from their body.
“This Ngerebong ceremony is part of Butha Yadnya ceremony that is ‘nyomia’ or changing evil nature into good nature. This ceremony is part of people gratitude onto their Ida Shang Hyang Widhi Wasa or Almighty God as well as in order to neutralize spirit or evil so they would not disturbed people especially Kesiman people,” explained Bendesa Adat Kesiman, Made Karim.
Ngerebong tradition is a hundreds of years old ritual in Kesiman village. Through the ceremony conducted once in 210 days, the villagers believe they could get rid of epidemics and disasters.
