Bali Seafarers is World Sailors Service Center

“Bali Seafarers’ Center” that purely established in 2003 from the donation of 21 sailors, is located at Danau Tamblingan Street No. 27 in Sanur Beach area is now in its final phase of renovation in becoming the service center for world sailors.

“The result of that donation we realize it in varied services units and supported devices so the location could become the community center for world sailors to meet, exchange information and sharing experiences,” said head of Indonesia Sailor Association for Bali, I Dewa Nyoman Budiasa, on Sunday.

Met by ANTARA in Sanur, it is mentioned that “Bali Seafarers’ Center” (BSC) developed for gathering site, finding information and service center for sailor all around the world planned to re-initiate on October 2010 coincides with International Transportation Worker Federation conference.

According to Budi, who familiarly called Budiasa, until today there are 10.000 active sailors from Bali who work on ships all around the world, most of them work on cruise besides there are also who work on cargo ship, tanker, fishing vessels, and more.

BSC owned and run by Koperasi Serba Usaha Pelaut Bali – Bali Sailor Complete Business Cooperation – managed by Brant Connors, who also act as the financier of BSC. This man who was born in US, had stay for ten years in Indonesia, since he take his college education in Malang, East Java for then choose to settle in Bali.

Due to the BSC’s main function is the gathering site and information sharing about marine, the existence will be combined with Kesatuan Pelaut Indonesia (KPI) – Indonesia Sailor Association – that is also the seafarers union organization.

At BSC also will be opened the delegation office for Norwegian Seamen’s Union (NSU) and International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) secretariat as it also stand with other services units. “It also could support our tourism,” Budi said.

With the merge of some marine organizations, BSC could often become the host for seminary, marine training as well as the source of information for sailor and prospective sailor.

In 2010, BSC is renovated with an assistance from the fund spend by ITF Seafarers’ Trust, with new building including the opening of new bar for entertainment site that always become the sailor needs together with the opening of “Warung Pelaut” restaurant for public.

At “Warung Pelaut” people offered with complete facilities such as professional pool table, WiFi, and live music.

BSC with its partnership, Dewi Aminudin, a tourism entrepreneur in Bali, manage the restaurant that offer Indonesian traditional menu. Dewi Aminudin viewed that Indonesian menu in this restaurant as a way for those sailors to fulfill their longing for home cooking as well as introducing Indonesia food to foreign sailors who visit Bali.
