As a famous tourism destination in the world, even Bali could not avoid the waste problem too. In accordance with the increasing number of people live in Bali, waste problem as something remained from people activity, gradually becoming more and more serious, urging for continuous solution of environmentally friendly waste management.

One of the real implementation of that solution is the waste management system applied at FPS Temesi (Fasilitas Pengolahan Sampah) – Waste Management Facility – in Gianyar. The facility built on 2.400 square meters of land is viewed has the right process to be conducted in Indonesia since this facility use simple waste management. They are sorting the waste then processing the organic waste into compost, meanwhile, non-organic waste or unrecyclable stuffs are sold to Lapak – place people sold used stuffs – Another exceptional factor from FPS Temesi is the completion of research facility solely for gaining best quality compost.

Sales and Science Manager of FPS Temesi, Diana Sari when welcomed group of press recently, asserted that FPS Temesi Gianyar can be used as a model for middle scale’s city waste management in Bali and Indonesia, it was decentralized and environmentally friendly at low cost. It is said that the project is a cooperation project with Gianyar Provincial Government, Rotary Ubud and GUS foundation in which people in Temesi Gianyar also involve directly with this processing facility.

According to Diana Sari, composting process in Temesi conducted in a table of 3-4 meter height, 30 meter width and 60-meter length. Aeration process conducted through installing pipes in the table compost, guaranteeing the process under aerobic condition. Aerobic composting process conducted is in order to avoid the formation and the release of methane gas to the atmosphere that is 21 to 23 times far stronger than carbon dioxide, the main gas element in global warming.

“Aerobic composting process is one of process that could fulfill the condition for Clean Development Mechanism in Kyoto Protocol,” she said whilst added that FPS Temesi has capacity to process 42.5-ton organic waste into 15-ton good quality compost every day.

Diana Sari asserted that FPS Temesi existence and operational is very consistent with Bali Green Province program proclaimed by Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika. Speaking about green province, she said that the first orientation for Bali must be organic agriculture that is environmentally friendly.

“In other word, FPS Temesi in fact has supported that Bali Green Province program,” she said firmly.

Besides visiting FPS Temesi, group of press were also visiting Penglipuran Village in Bangli. This village is one of typical village in Bali that really cares about the environment preservation. In order to realizing Bali as a green island, people in this cool weather area, from generation to generation always preserving the bamboo forest in their region.
